Registry Problems

A vital part of the Windows operating system, Windows system registry, is that area or database of your computer which contains critical instructions, settings, configurations, changes and options related to all the programs and hardware. When your system registry gets clogged, you are required to edit it but it is advisable that you do it with the help of an expert or software meant for it as incorrect editing may lead to serious implications.

Windows creates backup of your system registry as you boot your computer. A number of methods are used by the windows to restore the system registry.

  • The system registry can be restored till the system is bootable. It can also be restored from the Windows recovery environment.
  •  The Recovery Console can also restore the information. Operating Systems based on Windows NT also creates the backup of the registry structure.
  • Data of device driver and hardware can be restored by the Last Known Good Configuration option in case of Windows NT based systems.
  • To scan and fix the system registry, Windows Me and Windows 98 have checker tool, which creates back up of the system registry by default.

Error messages

Stop error messages generally take following forms:

1. Software errors. Computers running in Windows XP environment may display the stop message if the Software or device drivers installed in the machine have certain errors or problems.

2. Hardware errors. A hardware stop error will occur if:

  • A hardware device malfunctions, or
  • A hardware device is removed during the operation of Windows, or
  • The Hardware does not fully support the operations that XP expects it to support, or
  • Outdated BIOS information on older computers

3. Startup errors. Corrupted system files, hardware and driver errors can all cause Windows XP to come down crashing with a Blue Screen message without correctly booting into Windows.

4. Installation errors. Installation of Windows XP requires adequate carefulness for if there is a problem with your computer's hardware configuration or the media you are using to install XP, a stop error will likely occur.

5. Intermittent errors. Intermittent errors crop up consistently but apparently randomly and they are the most irritating type of stop message. Defective system memory, an overheating processor, dead or dying hard drive or faulty software and device drivers cause this sort of blue screen message.
