Most of the software products, today, offer auto update to their software. In order to apply recent patches, programs need to be updated. Though these are not always meant for security, a security patch may be issued along with the update. Microsoft products come with automatic updates and updating Windows is easier once you chose this option.

Programs that act as servers or access the internet are all avenues for attack and need to be patched regularly. On the other hand, smaller programs that do not have any threat outside the current working environment and do not use Internet may not need to be patched. Programs such as email, Internet explorer, firefox etc need to be patched on a regular basis as these have direct access to the Internet and for these programs new vulnerabilities keep arising regularly.

It is always advisable to check for patches to your software products at least once a month. If your PC is connected to the Internet constantly on a daily basis, particularly with high speed connections, you may be required to opt for a more stringent schedule on patches- weekly or biweekly. Automatic patch management software can facilitate this time consuming task.

You should check with your software vendor for information on when patches are available and whether the program offers automatic updates. You can update programs when your computer is idle or at night, so as not to restrict your browsing bandwidth.
